Infection from irremovable sutures.?

My wife had hand surgery 11 days ago. I was removing the stitches, accidentally cut the knot off of one and now can't remove it. These sutures are stitched under the incision in an oval shape with the opposite end of the knot under the skin. Once the knot is removed then there is no way to retrieve the suture unless she has it cut out. Will leaving this suture in cause any problems? They are not the kind that dissolve.
