How do you know if you have a missed stitch?

i just got my stitches removed a couple of weeks ago and theres a bump where the stitches use to be and i read somewhere about missed stitches and i was wondering how would you know if you have a missed stitch? does it hurt? what color is it? i mean just how can you tell, because im scared if i have one. please help!!! thank you!
